Combining high horsepower and high torque with Best in Class fuel economy, the General Motors 5.3L EcoTec3 L83 V8 engine is a marvelous example of the engineering prowess that GM uses in its full-size pickup trucks. Because this engine is so popular, we thought you would like to know more about this world-class GM V8.

At Stallons Auto in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, we sell many GM trucks with this engine, so knowing more about it will help you make a better buying decision. Coming to Stallons Auto is a better buying decision, too. We’re family-owned. It’s our family helping your family, and this makes all the difference. Because our customers trust us, they refer their family and friends to us. We’re confident you will, too.

The Family of GM EcoTec3 Engines

The GM EcoTec3 5.3L V8 is part of GM’s family of EcoTec3 engines. This all-aluminum block and head engine-line consist of a smaller 4.3L V6, the 5.3L V8, and a larger 6.2L V8. The aim of this GM family of engines is to provide GM truck owners the greatest engine horsepower and torque over a wide variety of truck work situations and demands while providing the highest possible fuel economy. You'll find these engines in the 2014-2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierras. GM balances power with fuel efficiency with a mixture of high-tech engine design and testing.

GM Spends 10 million Hours Designing Its 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 Engine

GM’s Small-Block chief engineer and program manager, Jordan Lee reports that GM has over 10 million hours of computation CPU design time invested in the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine, with 6 million of those hours devoted to the advanced combustion system design alone. And over 100 different trials were modeled to bring the best combination of combustion chamber design (size, shape and piston head form), direct fuel injection, active fuel management (cylinder deactivation) and variable valve timing (VVT).

5.3L EcoTec3 V8 Engine’s Combustion Chamber Design Saves Gas

The combustion chamber is where the gasoline is ignited to drive the piston to power the engine. Design is critical to achieving the highest power and lowest fuel use. In the 5.3L EcoTec3 engine, GM has reshaped and decreased the size of the combustion chamber and optimized the contours of the piston head, which boosts power and fuel efficiency. This direct fuel injection technology burns the gasoline more completely, so no gas is wasted, producing higher horsepower and torque.

Active Fuel Management on the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 Engine

Active Fuel Management (AFM) deactivates piston cylinders that receive fuel when the engine is under a light load. When driving to or from a worksite with nothing in the pickup bed, full power is not needed. AFM will deactivate four of the cylinders, effectively making the engine operate as a V4. This saves many gallons of gas that would otherwise be consumed, driving pistons that need not be used. This allows the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 to achieve a Best in Class fuel efficiency rating of 16 MPG driving in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. This is done while generating 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. And you can use E85 flex-fuel in this engine, too.

5.3L EcoTec3 V8 Engine Uses Variable Valve Timing

Continuously Variable Valve Timing allows the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 to produce high horsepower and torque over a wide portion of the engine’s operating speed while saving fuel. This is done by changing when the engine valves open and close. Variable valve timing optimizes gasoline combustion for greater power using less fuel.

GM has designed the 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine with you in mind. Giving you maximum horsepower and torque when needed and the Best in Class fuel efficiency saves you money. Schedule a test drive with us at Stallons Auto in Hopkinsville, Kentucky to see just how well the GM EcoTec3 5.3L V8 performs in a variety of real-world scenarios.

Purchasing Light-Duty Trucks in Hopkinsville, KY

If you have made up your mind to buy a new boat to take friends and family to the lake then it may not be possible to tow it around with the old family sedan. Maybe it’s time to upgrade to a truck. If you need to tow a trailer, it’s important to determine which trailers your vehicle can pull.

When to Consider Light-duty Pickup Truck?

Stallons Auto has the best half-ton truck inventory in the Princeton area, with a great selection of models that can fit any driving or towing need. Let’s highlight the towing ability of the half-ton trucks on our lot to help you find the ideal truck.

Light-duty trucks put together a large portion of the pickup truck segment. Common half-ton trucks include models such as Ford F-150, RAM 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and GMC Sierra 1500. Modern “half-ton” trucks very much fall into the GVWR Class 2 list. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) implies the maximum operating weight a truck can safely carry including the truck’s chassis, engine, engine fluids, accessories, fuel, passengers, driver, cargo and the body. Today, these trucks are likely to have a curb weight of around 5000+lbs., payload capacities that range from 1000 lbs. to 3000 lbs., and towing capacity of around 12,000 lbs. depending on the engine, rear-axle ratio, and addition of available options.

Most buyers who buy light-duty trucks have only light commercial truck needs, towing small items such as furniture or moderately sized building supplies or construction equipment. Moreover, these trucks are easy to park and easier to drive on narrow roads common to urban areas.

Half-ton Towables

Overall, there is no set towing capacity for light-duty trucks. Recreational Vehicles (RV) must know the towing and payload capabilities of their specific half-ton truck as these limits are imperative in safely matching a truck and trailer. For instance, a truck with an allowable towing capacity of 12,000 lbs. might seem like the exact fit for a 9,000 lb. travel trailer. However, the 900-lb hitch weight of that trailer may max out the truck’s payload after considering passengers, cargo, and optional equipment.

RV shoppers should also bear in mind that some lightweight-classified trailers can be towed by properly equipped light-duty trucks that are rather large compared to their weight. For example, even if you select a fairly long ultra-light trailer that’s matched properly to your truck, it still can be affected by crosswinds.

The Pickup Trucks Popularity in Hopkinsville, KY

While once traditionally used for farm work and other heavy-duty applications, the pickup truck has become as American as apple pie, Yankee Stadium, or the Fourth of July. Today, we have proudly become a nation of pickup trucks with the Ford F-Series trucks, Chevrolet Silverado trucks, and Ram 1500-3500 trucks holding the title as the best-selling vehicles.

A few years ago, pickup trucks were a family’s second vehicle. Today, the pickup truck has emerged as the go-to option with enough space to carry your family, drive to work, tow a trailer, trek to your favorite campsite, or haul a load. Simply put, the pickup truck is the most popular vehicle in the United States and here are a few reasons why.

No One-Size-Fits-All Truck Solutions – Variety of Cabin Sizes
In life, there are hardly ever any one-size-fits-all solutions. What works for one person or family may not work for the next. As a result, the versatility in truck offerings makes them a viable solution for virtually any family. For instance, you can choose a smaller, mid-size truck like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, or GMC Canyon for a more efficient experience.

However, the most popular class of trucks are the light-duty, full-size trucks, such as Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Toyota Tundra, or Nissan Titan. Within this segment, you can choose from several cabin configurations — ranging from the single-cab to the largest crew cab truck that boasts the same (if not more) interior space as some full-size SUVs. Best of all, regardless of the cabin configuration you choose, you’ll enjoy the power to tow and handle whatever life throws at you.

This Isn’t Your Granddaddy’s Stripped Down Truck

Think of everything you love about a luxury vehicle like premium leather, cutting-edge technology, world-class safety features, etc. While the pickup trucks of yore were offered in a couple of trims — bare and not as bare — today’s modern truck comes equipped with any and everything your heart could desire.

For instance, the Ram pickup truck boasts more high-grain leather and real wood than any other truck in the segment, while Chevrolet and Ford trucks offer advanced infotainment systems and even 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspots. On the other hand, Toyotas and Honda trucks each feature a comprehensive safety suite with some of the most advanced driver-assistive features available on the market!

Trucks Are the Do-It-All, Handle-Anything-While-Looking-Good Choice

All it takes for you to have an armoire or couch that needs to be moved from Point A to Point B for you to realize how much you’d benefit from owning a truck! In the end, there are countless applications and situations where a truck is just a better vehicle. This outstanding versatility is another reason why pickup trucks are so popular in the U.S.

Are You Looking to Robert Frost It…on a Road Less Traveled?

If you dream of crushing rocks, dominating trails, and slinging mud; then a pickup truck may be your best solution! While the Jeep Wrangler is an option, it doesn’t offer the interior space or on-road performance of a pickup truck. Simply put, the best off-road pickup trucks will give you the capability to go where other vehicles wouldn’t dream, the ability to use the tailgate for cargo, and the ground clearance to help you avoid frame impacts.

Naturally-Aspirated vs Turbocharged Engines

If you’re in the market for a new or used vehicle, you’ve undoubtedly heard the terms naturally-aspirated engines vs turbocharged engines.

In either case, as emissions regulations continue to increase and the world demands more fuel-efficient vehicles, it’s glaringly clear turbocharged engines play a pivotal role in the future. Let’s take a closer look at naturally-aspirated engines vs turbocharged engines, so you best understand which option is better for you.

What Is a Naturally-Aspirated Engine?

The standard and reliable old-school V6 or V8 engines are naturally-aspirated. These engines use an air intake to pull air into the engine through a process that depends on creating a vacuum to feed air into the intake manifold of the engine as needed. The two ways to bolster airflow into a naturally-aspirated engine is to install a high-flow aftermarket air intake or to replace the stock air filter with a less restrictive one.

Naturally-aspirated engines are extremely reliable and traditionally feature excellent low-end power for hauling and towing. This is the primary reason many full-size trucks still rely on large naturally-aspirated V8 engines.

What Is a Turbocharged Engine?
Contrary to popular belief, turbocharging isn’t a new technology. In fact, it has been around for over 100 years but has significantly evolved. While it used to be an exclusive feature on performance cars, today virtually every brand of vehicle has turbocharged options, including Ford EcoBoost and Honda Civics. How does turbocharging work? When you turbocharge an engine, you’re not changing the engine. Instead, turbocharging works to bolster the power output of the engine without necessarily altering the weight of the block.

A turbocharge explains a type of forced induction that compresses air flowing into the engine. When this airflow is compressed, additional air will enter the cylinder, which also means more space for fuel. With more fuel and air, you’ll enjoy bigger combustions and more power for improved acceleration — in comparison to a naturally-aspirated engine.

What Is a Supercharged Engine?
The supercharged-engine and turbocharged-engine are really like siblings, and they should be superchargers and turbochargers vs naturally-aspirated engines. In short, superchargers are similar to air compressors. Instead of pulling the gasses from the exhaust system of the vehicle, superchargers use fresh air and compress it prior to moving it to the engine’s air intake manifold.

Superchargers do not produce as substantial of a power gain as turbochargers can. However, superchargers do not struggle with heat issues and do not have a lag. They also work to create outstanding power delivery at much lower RPMs. One of the downsides to superchargers is that they can make an obnoxious whining noise.

Naturally-Aspirated vs Turbocharged Engine – Which Option Is Better?

Naturally-aspirated engines are typically more dependable and reliable than forced-induction types of engines or engines with superchargers or turbochargers. However, you’ll need a heavy, large and gas-guzzling engine — like a massive V8 on a pickup truck — to have a high-output, naturally-aspirated vehicle. While turbocharged engines can deliver excellent power-to-weight ratio, they do have turbo lag, which means the power is a bit slower to reach the wheels.

Used Truck Prices High Not At Stallons Auto

You may have noticed recently that pre-owned truck prices have gone up.

Way up.

There are a variety of factors causing truck prices to rise. At Stallons Auto in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, we have a tried and true strategy to keep our truck prices lower, so we outperform our competition. We are passionate about providing cars and trucks that have much more value than other dealerships.

Factors Driving Up Pre-Owned Truck Prices

The main factor driving pre-owned truck prices so high is that more people are buying them. A decently outfitted new work truck averaged $48,369 in 2018. Just 10 years ago in 2008, the average price for a new work truck was $32,694. That’s a difference of $15,675 and a 48% increase. It's easy to see why pre-owned trucks are a much better option. But when so many people are opting for pre-owned trucks over new, the higher demand for pre-owned trucks draws down their supply. And therefore, their prices rise. It’s really just basic economics.

New Truck Prices Have Skyrocketed, Affecting Pre-Owned Truck Prices

And, the new trucks today are more plush. With leather seats, all the wiz-bang, high-tech gadgetry, and the countless driver-assist and safety features that all new trucks now possess, prices simply skyrocket into the upper stratosphere on their way to the moon.

Some new full-size pickup trucks can cost more than $100,000.

Because new trucks are so high priced, when these trucks get traded in, their pre-owned truck sale price will naturally be higher. Trucks have historically had better resale value than cars. And, trucks outfitted with all the bells and whistles hold their value even better. More options, better trim levels, and more powerful drivetrains simply sell for more because they are better vehicles.

Truck Trade-Ins Keep Pre-Owned Truck Supply Down

But truck owners aren’t trading their trucks in. They see the high price of new trucks and decide to keep and refresh their truck, rather than buying a new one that costs as much as a house, in some cases. This further keeps the supply of pre-owned trucks low, which forces pre-owned truck prices higher.

Late Model, Low Mileage Pre-Owned Trucks Highest Priced

So, which pre-owned truck prices seem to be rising the most? Late-model and low mileage trucks have seen a dramatic increase lately. This is because they are the ones most like the new trucks we just spoke of in the paragraphs above. If business owners and families cannot afford the astronomical prices of a brand new truck, they will automatically defer to the truck that is closest to new.

You can see the reasons the price of pre-owned trucks are so high: the high price of new trucks and the lower supply of pre-owned trucks. Higher prices for new trucks push more buyers to purchase pre-owned trucks, increasing prices due to higher demand. Because new trucks are more expensive, traded-in pre-owned truck prices will naturally be higher. And since new truck prices are so high, more and more truck owners are deciding to keep their trucks long, decreasing the supply of pre-owned trucks, which, you guessed it, drives pre-owned truck prices higher.

Jeep Wrangler - Last True SUV at Stallons Auto

Jeep Wrangler - Last True SUV at Stallons Auto Hopkinsville KY

When trying to define just what a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is, you can find lots of definitions. But, when you read automotive magazines, such as Road and Track, Car and Driver, and Motortrend, the SUV that all others are compared to is the Jeep Wrangler. At Stallons Auto in Hopkinsville, Kentucky we always keep the Jeep Wrangler in stock, because, like the automotive press, we know that the Wrangler is the ultimate SUV.

Jeep Wrangler’s Reputation for Survivability and Popularity

The Jeep Wrangler is the SUV that started service to the US military in World War II before such a thing as an SUV even existed. Making a name for itself for its durability, ruggedness, and performance, the Jeep of yesteryear still finds life inside the present-day Jeep. Timeless ruggedness, performance, and survivability are an integral part of the DNA of Jeep Wranglers, driving along the roads, highways and trails of America now. As a matter of fact, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler won Motortrend’s SUV of the year. And its traditional Jeep look was even updated this year.

Motortrend found what Jeep Wrangler owners have known for years: the Wrangler is capable (if it’s good for the military, it can handle USA streets just fine), it’s infinitely customizable with enough accessories to sink a battleship, it’s wildly popular, and holds its value better than any vehicle in America.

The capability and survivability of the Jeep Wrangler is legendary. The Jeep was designed to survive World War II and has survived every military action it was involved in since. This original design has made the Jeep Wrangler a more durable and dependable SUV at home.

Jeep Wrangler Resale Value Higher Than ALL Other Vehicles

A study by iSeeCars found that the Jeep Wrangler and the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited had a higher resale value after five years of vehicle ownership than any other vehicle. Quoting the study, “Jeeps earned the top two spots on the list, with the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited having the lowest five years depreciation followed by its two-door counterpart, the Jeep Wrangler, by a fraction of a percentage point. Jeeps are known for retaining their value due to their enduring popularity, as well as their durability and performance across all terrains.” Jeep Wrangler is the ultimate high value, low depreciation SUV.

Endless Ways to Customize Your Jeep Wrangler

Another keystone to the Jeep Wrangler’s enduring success as the ultimate SUV is its fun and that it’s endlessly customizable. Depending on how you plan to use your Jeep, there is most certainly an accessory you can bolt on to make your Jeep life more fun. Whether on-road or off-road, Jeep accessories like front brush guards and nerf bars, running boards and side steps, winches and skid plates, not only make your Jeep more survivable and enjoyable, but also add to its resale value, further enhancing your Jeep investment. When you want an SUV that matches your personality, no other SUV has more ways to customize and accessorize than the Jeep Wrangler.

When you want to test drive the SUV that towers above all other SUVs, come to Stallons Auto in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Our team can show you why we always have the king of SUVs, the Jeep Wrangler, in stock ready to take on the most treacherous trails. And win.

The popularity of Sedans and Coupes in the US are still high because people feel that they’re better when it comes to the kind of favored performance and fuel efficiency. Many automakers are regularly coming out with new sedans, coupes, SUVs, and pickup trucks with modern and environment-friendly technologies so that you can take advantage of in your daily life.

Top Reasons to Buy a Sedan/Coupe in Fort Campbell

Sedans and Coupes are often known for their excellent comfort and stylish design. They’re ideal for small families who don’t need much room or space for extra cargo. They also handle better on the road with a lower center of gravity and many models are becoming more and more fuel efficient, while still maintaining a more robust engine than other types of small vehicles.

We’re going to dig deeper and provide drivers with the top reasons why they should go for sedan/coupe when purchasing their next vehicle.

  1. Better Fuel Economy - Lighter weight, lower suspension, and a more aerodynamic design allow sedans and coupes to be more fuel efficient. If it’s all about saving money on fuel costs, then a sedan or coupe is sure to be the perfect fit for you. The lighter weight also means better acceleration and stopping. These days, a lot of sedans also offer a hybrid option for increased fuel efficiency, but both traditional and hybrid sedans and coupes are almost always more efficient than the rest of the body types.
  2. Superior Handling - Most of the Sedans have turned into performance vehicles as they offer better handling compared to other body styles. The improved agility also reduces hassle in case of an emergency maneuver and you’ll also have more confidence in doing so.

Also, sedans and coupes can be more affordable with lower MSRP's. Moreover, they offer classic styling over other body types and are designed to deliver. If you’re seeking a trustworthy vehicle, there’s certainly no better choice than a sedan or a coupe.

Full-size Pickup vs. SUV vs. Sedan – Which should you Buy in Hopkinsville, KY?

What Vehicle is right for you: a full-size pickup truck, an SUV, or a sedan? Each type of vehicle offers exclusive benefits to its owner, from cargo ruggedness to roomy passenger room, and with choices that are almost comparable in price; it can be a tough decision.

Full-Size Pickups

Full-size pickups are ruling the US auto market. Ford, General Motors (with its Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra brands), and RAM sell millions of full-size pickups yearly. Quite popular and profitable, they’re usually favored by people like contractors, ranchers, and farmers. They demand towing credibility, hauling capacity, and off-road capability from their pickups.

The pickup trucks have a killer feature: the truck bed. They’re also useful when you need to move house, engage in some serious gardening, heavy home improvement, or just to move around anything from mountain bikes to kayaks. You can carry all your stuff and not have to rent a truck. It’s one of the crucial arguments in the truck vs. SUV debate.

In addition to more towing and payload strength, some of the other chief advantages include:
  • More interior and cab space
  • Best-in-class horsepower and torque output along with a high-capability four-wheel drive system
  • More versatile body construction

If you don't need the cargo space available in a truck bed, but maybe need additional cabin space for more people, then an SUV might be the better choice. Over the years, the SUV has become one of the most favored segments in the Auto Industry. Due to the following benefits, these stylish and roomy vehicles are preferred by a small class of people over Sedans. Some of the most popular SUVs at Stallons Auto have been Ford Expeditions, Chevrolet Suburbans & Tahoes (Also the GMC Yukon), and many others.

Some benefits of SUV's include:

  • Passenger capacity and comfort: Due to stronger chassis, SUVs offer a spacious interior with ample leg and headroom. Generally, SUVs come with a seating capacity of about seven.
  • More Cargo Space: With adjustable seating, cargo spaces can be altered to fit almost any amount of gear you desire.
  • Passenger Safety: Due to the size and impact force, SUVs are safer and offer more steel protection to passengers.
  • Off-Road Use: SUVs are popular among people who live in snowy and terrain regions as they are capable to handle roads with terrain, snow, or other rough surfaces. Thanks to an all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive option.
  • Fuel Economy: More fuel efficient than trucks
  • Financial Benefits: Often costs less than trucks

When comparing sedans and sports utility vehicles (SUVs), you'll find that you can spend less and buy a nice vehicle if you choose a sedan. Many sedans can carry up to 5 passengers comfortably and still have room for cargo in the trunk. Popular ones take in Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Malibu and it goes on. Below are the top reasons why you should consider a sedan as your next vehicle:
  • No raised suspension and lighter weight means better fuel economy
  • More Affordable
  • Superior Handling
  • Improved Aerodynamics
